What is Fluid Bearings?

Fluid bearing is a type of bearing that acts on the fluid bearing surface allowing the smoother movement of the two materials. Here, the load is supported by a thin layer of high-speed pressurized gas or liquid between the bearing surfaces. As there is no contact between the moving parts, there will be no friction that allows fluid bearings to have lesser friction and wear & tear and vibration. 

These fluid bearings are of two types- fluid dynamic bearings (hydrodynamic bearings) and hydrostatic bearings. Hydrostatic bearings are externally pressured fluid bearings and here the fluid can be oil, air, or water and this is pressurized by the pump. Hydrodynamic bearing depends on the high-speed journal that is the part of the shaft resting on the fluid so that they will pressurize the fluid in a wedge between the faces.

These fluid bearings are largely used in high-speed, high load, or high precision applications. If ordinary ball bearings are used in such circumstances, they won’t last long and will create heavy noise and vibration.
